“The project ‘A good start’ made it possible for me to go to work and support my girls, because my youngest daughter was enrolled in preschool,” says Maria.

The International Youth Centre in Stara Zagora in Bulgaria has been awarded the Council of Europe’s Quality Label Award for its work on empowering young citizens in Bulgaria.

Children with a parent in prison often face social stigma. With support from Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway, Hungarian children of incarcerated parents now receive support aiming to overcome stigma and facilitate family contact. 

Every week approximately 30 people take an express HIV-test at the checkpoint run by the human rights organisation MOZAIKA. Five percent of the tests turns out to be positive.

In the beginning of October, a new rehabilitation and treatment centre for drug addicts was officially opened at Olaine Prison in Riga. The construction of the new unit is an important first initiative to fight drug dependency in Latvian prisons.

“The first time I saw my self-portrait I cried and felt ugly, I looked very vulnerable,” the former inmate Kristine says.

“I wanted to die in this picture, but at the same time I didn’t. I needed to show sadness, loneliness and impotence, because I was trapped behind these wall,” says the inmate Noé (41) who participated in the art therapy project ‘Her/Story’.

With support from Norway, Gdansk Technical University in Poland and the Norwegian Foundation for Scientific and Industrial Research (SINTEF) have worked together to reduce noise pollution from older vehicles.  

In Romania, a project funded by Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway through the Romanian ‘Research Cooperation’ programme, aims to raise awareness of cultural identities by documenting the oral history of Roma.
